ECI Combustion Training Lab visits the California State Capitol

The Energy Conservation Institute (ECI) recently had the privilege of displaying one of its new mobile Combustion Training Labs at the California State Capitol in Sacramento. Arranged by members of the California Energy Commission (CEC) and Assembly Member Pedro Nara, the visit provided an opportunity to discuss training needs for the growing list of green workforce jobs being created, and the latest resources available to students and educators.

Legislators toured the fully functional lab and had the opportunity to see firsthand the systems and conditions that weatherization technicians are likely to encounter in the field. An assortment of diagnostic tools and instruments, including blower doors, infrared cameras and combustion analyzers were also demonstrated.

ECI President, David Brown, said “It was great to have legislators and small business together to discuss such an important topic ...quality training for the new green workforce. As a developer of curriculum for BPI Training Affiliates, we recognized early on that to have a successful program we needed to provide a solution for teaching the hands-on component. Knowing firsthand the challenges associated with taking a dozen or more students into a private residence, not to mention the enormous liability, we spent the past year engineering a solution. Now through our Mobile Building Performance Labs, educators are able to safely and conveniently provide hands-on training - even in the remotest areas of their district.”

Basic features of each lab include:

Blower Door and Duct Testing - Learn how to set-up, operate and properly interpret blower doors and duct testers using today’s latest digital manometers and high power fans.

CAZ Analysis
 - Learn how to identify, test and interpret findings in both single and dual Combustion Appliance Zones (CAZ), and how the lab’s “bedrooms and bathroom” impact both areas differently.

Combustion Testing
- Get “up and close” with four different furnace types – wall type, atmospherically vented, fan assisted, sealed combustion – and learn how to test for CO, draft and spillage.

Furnace Analysis - Test low, mid and high efficiency FAU’s to better understand the impact of atmospherically vented systems versus fan induced and sealed combustion units.

Hot Water Tank Testing
- Learn how to properly perform a spillage, draft and CO test on a traditional propane hot water tank using both digital and handheld tools.

Pressure Diagnostics
- With three individual "rooms" to test (each with ventilation and leakage controls), learn how using a manometer and pressure diagnostics can help locate areas of highest concern.

Range and Oven Testing
- From burner interpretation to vent and ambient air CO measurements, learn through hands-on testing how kitchen appliances impact the home’s health and safety.

Thermal Imaging - From entry level to the most powerful IR cameras, learn how using thermal imaging to locate missing insulation, air leakage and other problems can be a very cost effective approach.

For educators ECI Labs are the ideal solution to ensuring a quality building performance and energy auditor program can be delivered. And since ECI labs run entirely on propane and can be towed with a pick-up truck, one lab is capable of serving numerous locations for a very reasonable cost. Additionally, ECI labs are approved for the administering of BPI Building Analyst, Building Envelope Professional, and Heating Professional field examinations. This allows educators the flexibility to provide BPI training and testing services whenever, and wherever, the demand is most needed.

Note: Our labs are not converted travel trailers or RV's and are approved by the DOT in all 50 states. The entire assembly of the lab, from frame to furnace, is completed in Southern California with high quality components and finish throughout.
