A Learning Experience Like No Other – We Guarantee It

It’s a bold statement, and we’ve worked hard to ensure we live up to it. At ECI, our BPI Building Analyst and Building Envelope Professional (BA/BEP) course is founded on a single principle: hands-on instruction, based on real world scenarios, is the best way to learn.

Unfortunately due to the exploding demand for trained professionals, most building performance and energy auditor courses are held in hotels or other facilities that allow for little or no hands-on training. And although a local “test house” can usually be arranged during the course, without knowing the condition of the home or type of systems present, these visits often end up providing an “overview” of what is required rather than actual hands-on training. Without acccess to the different appliances and systems found in a traditional home, students find themselves unprepared once in the field working. Many students have described their training as more of a “crash course” than a learning experience.

And it's not that we don't believe in site vists - we do. But as any experienced educator will tell you, ensuring access to homes that are suitable for student training is a near impossible task. Sometimes it works great and other times it can be a disaster. So, in an effort to provide a more consistent and valuable learning experience, ECI (along with leading industry manufacturers) engineered and built two building performance labs – one of which is completely mobile.
Mechanically designed to operate like a traditional home, ECI Building Performance Labs allow students to gain hands-on experience in a professional and comfortable environment. Dozens of scenarios can be demonstrated in a fraction of the time it takes through traditional site visits. And with full control of mechanical systems and lab pressures, our instructors create a learning environment that bridges classroom lecture with hands-on training – all without ever leaving the facility. If you want to succeed as a building performance contractor, the hands-on learning component of your training is critical.
Equipped with the latest test equipment, ECI Building Performance Labs offer:

Blower Door and Duct Testing - Learn how to set-up, operate and properly interpret blower doors and duct testers using today’s latest digital manometers and high power fans.

CAZ Analysis – Learn how to identify, test and interpret findings in both single and dual Combustion Appliance Zones (CAZ), and how the lab’s multiple rooms impact both areas differently.

Combustion Testing - Get “up and close” with four different furnace types – wall type, atmospherically vented, fan assisted, sealed combustion – and learn how to test for CO, draft and spillage.

Fireplaces – Little is known about the health and safety impact of gas fireplaces. What can be determined during a building performance evaluation? Explore options using the lab’s propane fireplace.

Furnace Analysis - Test low, mid and high efficiency FAU’s to  better understand the impact of atmospherically vented systems versus fan induced and sealed combustion units.

Hot Water Tank Testing - Learn how to properly perform a spillage, draft and CO test on a traditional propane hot water tank using both digital and handheld tools.

Pressure Diagnostics - With multiple rooms to test (each with ventilation and leakage controls), learn how using a manometer and pressure diagnostics can help locate areas of highest concern.

Range and Oven Testing - From burner interpretation to vent and ambient air CO measurements, learn through hands-on testing how kitchen appliances impact the home’s health and safety.

Thermal Imaging - From entry level to the most powerful IR cameras, learn how using thermal imaging to locate missing insulation, air leakage and other problems can be a very cost effective approach.
And much more...with dozens of scenarios capable and small class sizes of only (8) students per instructor, we guarantee you'll be satisfied with our course or we'll refund your money.*
